About Scarlett Shockley

My passion for mental health was sparked during a psychiatric rotation in nursing school, leading me to serve as a psychiatric technician at Methodist Richard Young. Throughout this time, I advanced my education, earning a nursing degree in 1990 from Nebraska Methodist College of Nursing, followed by a communications degree in 1995 and a master's in counseling in 1997, both from the University of Nebraska.

In my practice, I work with adults aged 19 and older, addressing a spectrum of concerns from mild to severe. I find deep fulfillment in supporting clients through acute psychiatric conditions, such as bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, major depression, and borderline personality disorder. By providing education on illness management and trigger recognition, I aim to empower those who feel overwhelmed by their brain chemistry to regain a sense of agency. Furthermore, my clinical nursing background offers a unique perspective that helps me navigate the complexities of both chronic and acute medical issues.

I believe therapy is a valuable tool for various life challenges, whether it involves mastering techniques to manage anxiety, improving communication, or navigating difficult transitions like grief, retirement, health changes, or evolving relationships. To provide specialized care, I have completed Level II training in EMDR and am "intensively" trained in DBT through Behavioral Tech (the Linehan group).

Areas of Expertise

I see adults 18 and older. I work with mild to severe problems.  Working with clients who are diagnosed with acute psychiatric disorders (Major Depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, etc.) is very rewarding for me. I feel that educating a client about their illness and how to recognize triggers and manage symptoms, empowers someone who feels victimized by their brain chemistry to not feel so overwhelmed and helpless. My nursing background has helped me to better understand chronic and acute medical disorders.

Therapy can be beneficial for all kinds of issues. My primary focus (after establishing safety) is increasing quality of life. Learning simple, effective techniques to reduce anxiety or increase communication skills, can help increase quality of life- both personal and professional. I believe if people suppress their emotions, it will come out elsewhere- health issues, relationship discord, or problems tolerating a work environment.
